Sad Day here

Had to say goodbye to Lucy today.  She was diagnosed with a tumour on her spleen and there was nothing that could be done. She started going downhill only a few weeks ago.  It came on fast and ended fast for her.

I am thinking back to when she arrived in this world. I had barely been in the Yukon a month - back in 2000 when they were born! Wow.  She was one of 7 or so that I watched obsessively for DAYS as they were born and then nutured by their mother. It was a cold day in January, and I friggin' sat in that doghouse (was a big doghouse) with them 24hrs a day practically. It was fascinating to see, and the first litter I'd really seen being born.  I couldn't tear myself away!!
snow face Lucy

As they grew, the litter became complete and utter terrors! Their mother couldn't wait to get the hell away from them, and I distinctly remember CRYING one time as I exited out of the pen after feeding them! I was freakin' CRYING!!! I am not kidding and almost embarassed to admit it, but it is kinda funny now 12yrs later.  It was absolute craziness.  They were jumping up and biting and grabbed my hair at one point, it was total mayhem.
skijor wipeout - look how concerned they are as Lucy gazes off into the trees..
And even though the three sisters certainly caused me to grow some grey hairs over the last 12 years, they have been more fun and entertaining than anything.  I think Lucy was going for a record on how many porcupine kills she would have in her life, or possibly for a record on how many quills she could have embedded in her face in a lifetime.  She had her own personality, was the most mellow of the three and also the most independent.

Here is a video that always makes me laugh - it was when I booted a pop bottle one day and caught Lucy straight in the head with it. She was not fazed at all, as she paused briefly, then went after the bottle! And please excuse my cackling, it was freakin' hilarious!!!

Quills? What porcupine quills?? In MY face you say??

RIP my little Lucifer, Lucy, Luce-ster, etc.

So sorry Stacie, I read your blog
all the time, but rarely comment,
but I love hearing about your crazy dogs! Unfortunately loss is part of having them share our life, but it's like losing any loved one. She was obviously well looked after and had a good life.
You did all you could.

So sad! But good that she could make it fast. That was a good life that not all dogs have (just see my dog's blog www.gizdog.blogspot.com).
Still, what a loss - thinking of you in Europe!

I've read your blog for so long now I feel like it is me that has lost a dog! Such a tough thing to go through and a hard decision to make if it isn't a natural passing. I'm so grateful you put this tribute to her on your blog for us to share as well. Hugs.

I didn't realize she was 12 already! Wow, time flies. What a lovely tribute to a great dog who clearly lucked out to have you from the very start of her life.

Yeah, 12. I can't believe it either Fawn! Time has flown. I've been reading old blog posts and it's sure made me chuckle a few times.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! It's certainly lonlier around here today, but I've got her sisters attached to me today (my doing, not theirs, lol). They are bringing a bit of comfort. Gracie, who is pretty in tune with me, was attached to me last night - had her head on my shoulders for awhile before I realized it. I looked over and saw her STARING at me... just peering into my soul practically, it was wild. She totally knew something was up. So today, it's just a day of smushing dogs!!!!

Oh No Stacie-I am so so sorry. I hate hemangiosarcoma more than I can say...we lost both Sophie and Monkey to it and it was so heartbreaking. The suddenness is so hard on us but I try to think of it as a blessing for our pups because they don't suffer. Lucy was such a funny girl-what a punk muffin! I am so so so sorry for your loss. I hope that smushing everyone a little extra tight will help your sadness a little...sending lots of hugs,
Sue

I am so sorry to hear about Lucy. I feel like I know her after reading your posts and seeing these photos. I had to smile at the porcupine quill photo. I had a dog who had an affinity for them too, and he seemed oblivious to their presence, continuing to smile a big smile with them sticking out of his face, just like Lucy.

May Lucy rest in peace. You gave her an amazing life... a life that many dogs would love to live.

Sorry to hear of your loss. Dogs are more then pets, they're family.
