I like this shot. It's kinda artsy, even if you can't figure out what the heck is going on. Lemme explain - there was a lone raven who seemed to take a perverse joy in taunting the dogs. Ok, and the human...
Anyways, this raven was enjoying soaring in one spot in the massive amounts of wind. What is up with birds doing that anyways? Looks like SO much fun, that must be the answer. See, it's not all about survival, breeding and birdseed... no! Fun is to be had no matter what genus/species you fit into.

So this guy would swoop down really low, within what seemed like just a few feet of the dogs heads, and then lift itself up, just as the dogs were thinking the next meal was on their plate. In effect, pretty much driving them mad. Heehee!

Gracie does her best to try and get it, as she stands on her hind legs - hoping that extra foot will enable her to snag the rowdy raven. She barked madly at it, but it really didn't do any good. They never got close to it, and it taunted for a few more minutes till it flew off. The dogs wondered where the fun went, and got back to woodcutting. Or, rather, watching ME cut wood.
And here's Kuna, taking a bit of break. You know, running around for hours and chasing ravens is tough work.

Ok, I need me a nap... *yawwwn*
Other weird dog behaviours:
It always seems to be the same DOG getting into stuff and doing the weirdest things. Or is that just me?

Gracie's new thing is getting into my recycling container... ok, "container" is a strong word. More like recycling garbage bag. But she's ONLY interested in the water bottles. So we have this game where I leave the lids on, and she rifles through the bag, pulling out only the water bottles, and chews off the lids for me. She then leaves them scattered about in the yard, just to make sure I have yet ANOTHER thing to clean up in my virtually non-existent spare time these days.

Then, I decided to really hide the bag of recycling, and what does she do? Finds the FULL water bottles, steals one and brings it into the cabin. She drops it on the floor with a thunk and starts to gnaw on that lid, as if to say "you can't outsmart me - dumb human!"
Please, someone- call the dog psychiatrist!

I like Jack's expression here - it's almost as if he's acknowledging her weirdness with me. I think he's used to her quirkiness by now and used to her growling at them when they come near her fun. We obviously don't get this game.

That used to be one of Nanuq's favourite games - especially with the 2L pop bottles.
And as for Jack's expression, it looks to me more like he's saying, "As if you don't get this!"
Oh, Gracie, you are a silly girl. I think it's genetic more all the time cuz your brother is not all there either!
Muskwa and Kayleigh have both actually caught ravens. Kay got one that tried to take her bone. Messing with Kayleigh's food is a very, very bad idea! Muskwa actually climbed a chain link fence to get the one that was harassing him! He was much younger and faster back then! Now he can't be bothered to even chase them off!
Your Kona sure does look like my dog Tiko. Just letting you know, they may be long lost brothers. ;)
I forget how I found your blog in the first place but I so love reading what you and your pups are up to... and living in the city I love seeing all your empty wide open spaces.
Hey Stac does the raven and the dogs remind you a bit of Turkey and Tramp years ago? Great pictures especially the first one. Mom
Hi Stacie: I'm trying to find the website for your blog interface. Do you have the link for it? Looks like Hilary and I will be up your way around June 10th to the 20th
Hey Stacie--I've been reading your blog for a while and really enjoy it; I'm a lurker who doesn't comment much. But I just had to jump in on this post. Great first photo! Ravens are so entertaining, and such a pain in the butt. Have you seen them fly upside down? They do it just for fun. They are the ultimate prankster and funlover of the animal world. Around here, they love to taunt and harrass sled dogs. When my first litter of pups from my wonderful Susan Butcher dog got big enough to leave mom's house in the heat pen, the ravens--six at a time--took to sitting on the top of the 6' wall, occasionally swooping in to terrify the pups. I had to spread an old fish net over the top of the pen to keep them out. They retaliated by flying over and dropping sh*t bombs in the pen. Once the pups were grown, one of them managed to kill a raven that was stealing her food bowl--and she was on a chain! I dragged the dead bird to the center of the dogyard and left it there for a while. The ravens were pretty scarce for a few weeks after that.
Love your stories, and your photos (that bear in the tree was great!).
Michael - yeah, you could be right about the Jack thing. It could just be that I'M the one who doesn't get it!!
Tamara - yes, it's definitely genetic! None of these three is "all there" at all. That and SO full of attitude. Does Franklin have that attitude now that he's a normal dog?
Hey Emily - yeah, he does! Just checked out your blog - do you have more pics of your pooch? He is beautiful and I'm not just sayin' that... ;)
Ha Mom - yes, our pet magpie (Turkey) and the dog (Tramp) - best friends. Totally unlike my dogs and birds!! (now you all may see why I am also not "all there" - blame my parents!)
Susan - blog interface? Huh? Doing that bike trip next summer?
thetundrapa - thanks for commenting! Never seen a raven fly upside down, but when I worked in a kennel a few years ago, the ravens would do the craziest things to taunt the dogs and steal their food! It was amazing. They seemed to know exactly how close to the dogs they could get too. Some dogs totally ignored them, some tried to kill them every time. Sounds like your pup got revenge!
That reminds me - I don't think I mentioned this on the blog(?), but one of my females (George) puked up this huge pile of guts, bones and feathers one day. It was so massive, I couldn't believe it came out of her. Looking at it (yes, I had to analyze it!), it looked like the remains of a raven. Now that I think about it, I've found the remains of a lot of birds around here. First raven though. The rest are tiny, unsuspecting birds...
